Established in 1911, the Pitt Band is a cornerstone of the University of Pittsburgh. As the largest and most visible student organization on campus, Pitt Band is dedicated to excellence in marching and musical performance, promoting spirit on and off campus, and providing a compelling experience for all of its members.
The Basketball Pep Bands bring the noise to every home game for the men's and women's teams at the Petersen Events Center. Alongside the Oakland Zoo student section, the band fuels the arena and rallies Pitt fans from tip-off to the final buzzer. Members also get the chance to travel with the teams to the ACC and national tournaments—and you don't have to be in the marching band to join.
Keep the music going into spring by auditioning for the University of Pittsburgh Symphonic Band. Drawing from the finest concert band literature, the Symphonic Band brings together undergraduate and graduate musicians from across campus for a season of rehearsals and at least two performances in the Pittsburgh area. Auditions are held near the end of the fall semester and are open to all students—marching band experience not required.
The Volleyband brings the energy to Victory Heights as we cheer on the ACC Champion and NCAA Final Four Pitt Volleyball team. Beyond fueling the competitive atmosphere, the band has sparked some of the program's best new traditions—including a post-game rendition of "Snakes on a Plane" where the team busts out their best dance moves. Members also get the chance to travel with the team to the NCAA Tournament, and you don't have to be in the marching band to join.
Debuting in summer 2026, the inaugural Pitt Bands Summer Concert Band brings together students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Pitt for a season of music-making open to the wider community. The repertoire spans marches, patriotic favorites, wind band standards, pops arrangements, and more. Two rehearsals will lead up to a concert in Bellefield Hall on Pitt's Oakland campus—a chance for musicians of all backgrounds to come together and celebrate the sound of Pitt.
